The onboarding progression trap

Adding leaderboards to a product used by people who are primarily motivated by mastery (not competition) alienates the user base. Research your users' motivations before choosing mechanics. The wrong mechanic is worse than no mechanic.
Rewarding activity instead of outcomes
Points for logging in, badges for clicking buttons, levels based on time spent — these reward activity, not achievement. Users will game the metrics (leave the app open, click randomly) to earn rewards without engaging meaningfully. Reward completion, mastery, and outcomes instead.
